Strong focus on Sustainability
The new facility will be one of the most efficient and sustainable continental cheese production facilities in Europe.
As part of a strong focus on sustainable design, a highly efficient process will see water recirculated through the facility. During production, the blocks of cheese will be floated into a brine bath along water channels. Some 60% of the water required to manufacture the cheese will be recovered from the incoming milk.
Our Energy Efficiency
The process heating will use low pressure hot water boilers in place of the traditional steam boilers giving a 20% improvement in energy efficiency.
A heat recovery system is designed to recycle heat during the production process.
Tirlán’s Living Proof Sustainability Strategy
Our Kilkenny Cheese facility provides a vital processing outlet for over 450 million litres of milk a year from Irish family farms. Tirlán works with and supports its milk suppliers as they continue to enhance the environmental and economic sustainability of their family farms.
As part of its comprehensive sustainability strategy, Living Proof, Tirlán, along with its family farms, has pledged to deliver a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with each litre of milk produced by 2030 and has signed up to the internationally-recognised Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
All of Tirlán’s dairy suppliers are accredited to the Bord Bia Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme (SDAS).
